One of the largest open-air markets in the United States, La Pulga embodies the vitality, diversity, heritage, and entrepreneurial spirit of San José like no other place in the region. But in 2021, the 60-acre property was rezoned for a new transit-oriented mixed-use development, threatening to erase a seven-decade cultural legacy and the current livelihoods of its 400+ primarily immigrant vendors. The Berryessa Flea Market Vendors Association is advocating for the on-site preservation of the market or its relocation to a comparable new site. The City's Office of Economic Development is collaborating with vendor leaders but concrete steps have yet to be taken to avoid the market's destruction, which is currently slated to begin as early as 2024.
