The Endangered 8:
San José's Most Threatened Architectural and Cultural Landmarks of 2022
Alviso Historic District
Location:
Alviso
Date:
Built 1860s-1940s
Architect:
N/A
Threat:
Neglect
With a fascinating industrial and maritime history on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay, Alviso is one of the region’s most distinctive and historic neighborhoods. It is also one of its most neglected, with too many of its landmarks left to languish in a state of chronic neglect, including the c.1929 Bayside Cannery (pictured) and the c. 1860 Wade Warehouse, which suffered catastrophic damage in a June 2021 fire. Without immediate intervention and reinvestment, the historic character and integrity of this National Register-listed district could soon be lost forever.
