This turn-of-the-century West San José orchard was proudly tended by three generations of the Croatian-American Ban Family until the property was sold to a developer in 2021. In 2022, City Council approved entitlements for a 70-unit apartment building on the one-acre site, allowing for the complete demolition of this charming Italianate Victorian farmhouse, a rare surviving California Style fruit-drying barn, and 50+ mature cherry, citrus, plum, and olive trees. PAC*SJ is nevertheless continuing to work with the City, the developer, and other stakeholders to relocate some or all of these valuable historic resources to appropriate new sites or to redesign the project to keep them in place.
